Wouldn't it be great if this wait was not as long. August twenty thirteen whispers emerged that the P.G.A of America were considering moving the last major of the year to other Countries
“When we sat down to map our strategic plan to service our members and grow the game the question arose as to what impact it would have to take the USPGA Championship to an international location once or twice a decade,” Pete Bevacqua C.E.O
With seventy five percent of all Majors held in the United States, golfers world wide are starved of getting the opportunity to go see the best of the best fight for the biggest prize in the game. Even living here in Ireland getting over to The Open is tricky and costly. So for someone living in Asia, Australia even China its a once in a lifetime trip.
How great would it be for this event to travel, one year Australia the next South Africa, following on to China and then back to America. Also it would get rid of the lull of eight months waiting for The Masters. With Summer in Australia being during our winter Months, it would give the chance of a major in say October or even January.
The game is clearly global now and even in Whistling Straights five of the top ten players were international. Two South Africans, One English, one incredible Indian performance and of course our Australian friend. This was a trend in all Majors with Australia, South Africa, England, Ireland and Japan all having players in the feature groups on Sunday. Ok three of the events were won by Americans but I think the numbers do show a Major outside of Britian and America is needed.
You always hear commentators mention the fact we need to grow the game, well I personally think if this ever did happen the game would explode.
One of the great tradtions held since the beginning of the US PGA is the fact they hold twenty spots for members of the PGA, the real professionals who help the likes of Speith and Rickie play for silly money week in week out by getting people playing the game all over the world.
Imagine twenty members of the Chinese branch of the PGA getting to tee it up with Tiger and Co, this has to help the game.
One can wish I suppose.
